Learning Review Weeks 3–4 (GDC)

Learning Review Procedure: Teachers facilitate discussion and ask for student participation on Core Bible Stories, Weekly Bible Verses, and songs. Choose students to answer verbally in class. No writing is required, except for notes taken on the lyrics pages. Discussion is designed so that students increase long-term memory of the main ideas and hide God’s Word in their hearts!

Weeks 3 and 4 Core Bible Story  (10 minutes)

Read John 3:1-17 — Jesus Teaches Nicodemus to be Born Again

Teacher begins by reading the Core Bible Story (Parts I and II). Teacher facilitates discussion and highlights key points of the story with the following questions:
1) Why did Nicodemus, the Pharisee, come to see Jesus at night?
2) What did Nicodemus know about Jesus?
3) Was knowing that Jesus was from God enough to save Nicodemus (or anyone else)?
4) What did Jesus tell Nicodemus about how to be saved?
5) Jesus explains that He is the only person who has come from heaven, meaning He therefore knows the way. Jesus explains that just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so He must be lifted up. What is the connection between Moses lifting up the snake and what Christ did on the cross for us?

1) Nicodemus came to Jesus privately in the night, knowing that Jesus was from God, but not wanting anyone else to know about his curiosity.
2) He knew Jesus had come from God. He knew Jesus could not have performed the miracles he did if God were not with Him.
3) No. Nicodemus still hadn’t given his heart to Jesus.
4) Jesus told Nicodemus that he must be born again (born of the Spirit) to enter God’s kingdom.
5) God told Moses to make a bronze snake and put it on a pole so that if anyone was bitten they could look to the snake and live. Likewise, all people have sinned and will one day die. God provides a way to live. Jesus was nailed to a cross and was lifted up. All who look to Jesus will live. God gave His Son, Jesus, so that whoever believes in Jesus and looks to Him won’t perish but will instead have eternal life.

Psalm 19:1–2

Students turn to the Song Lyrics on page 117 of their Student Workbooks. While listening to the song, students write down their insights and make personal connections on the lyrics page (circle key words, underline action steps, write out what God is teaching them to do, rewrite main ideas in their own words, etc.).
Discuss: How does the song reflect the meaning of the passage?

The heavens tell the story of God’s glory. When we look around and see the sun, the skies, and the stars, we see God’s creation. It is as if His creation shouts out to us how great God is.

Student states the motto out loud. If correct, student writes the motto on the board as the teacher facilitates discussion on the meaning of the motto.

The heavens declare the glory of God

Application: In what ways do you see that the heavens declare the glory of God?

The stars, sun, ocean, and mountains shout that God is glorious! We should keep our eyes open so we recognize creation reflecting God’s glory everywhere. We ought to regularly thank God for his beautiful creation because it reminds us that God is there.
